Early Life
Robert Curthose was born in Falaise, Normandy. His mother was Matilda of Flanders, the wife of William the Conqueror. Robert was a strong and athletic child, and he was educated in the arts of war and government. He was also a skilled poet and musician.

In 1066, Robert Curthose accompanied his father on the invasion of England. He fought bravely at the Battle of Hastings, and he was rewarded with the earldom of Cornwall. However, Robert was not content with his new title. He wanted to be king of England, and he began to plot against his father.
Rebellion and Exile
In 1077, Robert Curthose rebelled against his father. He was joined by his brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. The rebellion was unsuccessful, and Robert was forced to flee to Normandy. He spent the next several years in exile, living in the court of his uncle, Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia.
In 1087, Robert Curthose returned to England and reconciled with his father. He was given the duchy of Normandy, and he ruled for the next 20 years. However, Robert was not a successful ruler. He was often away from Normandy, fighting in the Crusades or quelling rebellions. He also spent lavishly, and he was constantly in debt.
Capture and Imprisonment
In 1106, Robert Curthose was captured by his younger brother, Henry I. Henry had invaded Normandy and defeated Robert at the Battle of Tinchebray. Robert was taken prisoner and was imprisoned for the rest of his life. He died in 1134, at the age of 84.
Legacy
Robert Curthose was a complex and tragic figure. He was a brave and skilled warrior, but he was also reckless and ambitious. His reign as Duke of Normandy was marked by misfortune, and he ultimately died in exile. However, Robert Curthose is remembered as one of the most important figures in Norman history.
