The Real McKenzies were formed in 1989 by Paul McKenzie (vocals),Sean Muldoon (guitar),and Patrick "Paddy" Bowman (bass). The band's name is a play on the phrase "under the kilt", which is a reference to the traditional Scottish garment. The band's early sound was heavily influenced by traditional Celtic music, but they also incorporated elements of punk rock and Oi!.

The Real McKenzies released their debut album, "Clash of the Tartans", in 1992.
