Early Life and Education

Nathan Coulter Catlett was born on March 31, 1822, in Columbus, Ohio. His parents were John Catlett, a merchant, and Mary Coulter Catlett. Catlett attended public schools in Columbus and later studied photography at the Daguerreotype Gallery of William H. Harrison.

Career

Catlett began his career as a photographer in 1844. He opened a daguerreotype studio in Columbus, where he produced portraits and other commercial work. In 1858, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he opened a studio on Pennsylvania Avenue.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Catlett volunteered to serve as a photographer for the Union Army. He was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and documented the war's major battles, including the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Gettysburg.

Catlett's photographs of Gettysburg are some of the most famous and iconic images of the war. They capture the carnage and destruction of the battle, as well as the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in it. Catlett's photographs helped to bring the war home to the American people and played a vital role in shaping public opinion about the conflict.

After the war, Catlett continued to work as a photographer. He opened a studio in New York City and specialized in photographing celebrities and politicians. He also worked as a freelance photographer for magazines and newspapers.

Personal Life

Catlett was married to Elizabeth Ann Catlett. They had two children, a son and a daughter. Catlett was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was also a Freemason and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Death and Legacy

Catlett died on January 15, 1895, in Washington, D.C. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Catlett's legacy lives on through his photographs, which continue to inspire and educate people about the American Civil War.
