By Evaleen Stein
Bertha was a little Frankish girl who lived in the 10th century. She lived in a small village in the countryside of France. Her father was a farmer, and her mother was a homemaker. Bertha had two older brothers and a younger sister.
Bertha's family was poor, but they were happy. They had a small house with a thatched roof and a dirt floor. They had a few animals, including a cow, a pig, and some chickens. Bertha's family grew their own food, and they also hunted and fished.
Bertha's life was very different from ours today. She did not go to school. Instead, she helped her mother with the housework. She also helped her father in the fields. Bertha learned to spin wool, weave cloth, and sew. She also learned to cook and clean.
Bertha's life was not all work. She also had time to play. She loved to play with her brothers and sister. They would play games such as hide-and-seek and tag. Bertha also enjoyed playing with her dolls. She made her own dolls out of rags and straw.
Bertha's life was simple, but it was also full of joy. She was a happy child who loved her family and her friends.
A Day in the Life of Bertha
Bertha's day began early. She would wake up before sunrise and help her mother with the housework. She would sweep the floor, make the beds, and start the fire. Then she would help her mother prepare breakfast.
After breakfast, Bertha would help her father in the fields. She would plant seeds, weed the garden, and harvest the crops. She also helped her father care for the animals.
In the afternoon, Bertha would have some time to play. She would play with her brothers and sister, or she would play with her dolls. She also enjoyed singing and dancing.
In the evening, Bertha would help her mother prepare dinner. She would set the table, serve the food, and clean up afterwards. After dinner, Bertha would help her mother with the housework. She would wash the dishes, sweep the floor, and make the beds.
Bertha's day ended late. She would go to bed tired, but she was also happy. She had helped her family, and she had had some fun.
The Customs and Culture of the Middle Ages
Bertha's life was a reflection of the customs and culture of the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages was a time of great change and upheaval. Europe was emerging from the chaos of the Dark Ages, and new kingdoms and empires were being formed. The Church played a major role in people's lives, and there was a strong emphasis on religion.
The Middle Ages was also a time of great poverty and hardship. Most people were peasants who lived in small villages and worked the land. There were few opportunities for social mobility, and most people died in the same social class in which they were born.
Despite the hardships, the Middle Ages was also a time of great creativity and innovation. New technologies were being developed, and new ideas were being explored. The Middle Ages was a time of great change, and it laid the foundation for the modern world.
Our Little Frankish Cousin of Long Ago is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the Middle Ages. It is a charming and informative book that brings the past to life.
